Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: GD Mix for beginners?

I'm 24, and I joined this forum as a fresh-faced 18-year-old, so that places me firmly in the "Youngun" category as you say. GD is my dad's favorite band and has been my whole life, but my mom never cared for the dead throughout my parents' marriage. It wasn't until I got into them as a young adult (and my mom and dad were divorce, hmm) that she said "Hey this is kind of good," which motivated me to try to find a subset of Dead songs/performances that she might like. I'm one of those naive Deadheads who believes EVERYONE would love the Dead if only they heard the right songs. Sadly it hasn't worked with any of my girlfriends, but it did with my mom.

She's 56. I can't tell you what her tastes are. I just sorta went with my gut. It was like "this feels like a Mom kind of song" and went with it without questioning.

Franklin's Tower is a great finale I thought, and as a music geek I found it satisfying to go from Box of Rain, which ends with an Asus chord, to Franklin's, which is in A mixolydian.

At least your mom is older than me. But not by much. Quite solidly in the rock generation though. Not even classic Woodstock era.

How can you not know her tastes?!? Speaking as a mom here, ask her!

So you were the age my kid is now when you started on the forum ... wow. Did you know how to clean your room? Wait, I shouldn't ask you that question. I should ask your mom. :-)

I have a feeling you knew A mixolydian, though. Aside from having excellent taste. Which you MUST be able to transmit to girlfriends ... keep trying ... maybe you need to go to more DSO shows or festivals or something ... a million bazillion FB likes can't all come from folks over 40!

Yea he's 8 years younger than my youngest child, and only 9 years older than my oldest grandchild. Can I get the walker when you're done?
